After a fierce battle, the Confederates emerged victorious, dealing a significant blow to Union hopes for victory in the Shenandoah Valley. The Battle of Cross Keys was fought just six days later, on May 21. Once again, Breckinridge’s Confederates squared off against Sigel’s Union troops. This time, however, the Union forces were able to hold their position, resulting in a strategic victory that helped turn the tide of the war. Today, both battlefields are preserved as historical sites, and offer Page County visitors a rare chance to experience the lasting mark of events that shaped our nation’s history.
