The Hickory Motor Speedway is one of stock car racing’s most storied venues, often referred to as the “World’s Most Famous Short Track” and the “Birthplace of the NASCAR Stars.” It opened in 1951 as a half-mile dirt track. Gwyn Staley won the first race at the Speedway and later became the first track champion. Drivers such as Junior Johnson, Ned Jarrett, and Ralph Earnhardt also became track champions in the 1950s, with Earnhardt winning five of the events. The Speedway now hosts several races annually, including the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Located on the highest elevation point in Catawba County, Bakers Mountain Park features 189 acres of mature Chestnut Oak forest with nearly 6 miles of trails. A quarter-mile paved, ADA-accessible trail meanders through plantings near the parking area. The park is open year-round and is popular for hiking, biking, and picnicking; it also offers numerous educational programs and events.
